SOME FACTS ABOUT THE TRIAL

Three trials have been planned, 2 for the Africans and a few who are of the African descent and one for the accused Europeans. A Luanda colonial newspaper, the daily ‘A Província de Angola’ of December 21st 1959 gave the following account:

IMPORTANT TRIAL FIXED FOR MARCH 7th. The judicial tribunal of this country has fixed March 7th as the date for the trial of the 32 individuals who were declared as being responsible for a crime against State security by the 2nd  Vara (2nd. Office). This crime is punishable under No.1, Article 11 for the Penal Code and Nos. 1 and 2 of the same Code. We have previously published the names of the individuals. Of the 32 accused, 11 will be judged in absentia. The trial, which will be open to the public, will be presided over by the judge Dr. Jorge Henrique da Cruz Pinto Furtado. The defense will be in the hands of the lawyers Dr. Eugenio Ferreira, Dr. Santana Godinho, Maria do Carmo Medina, Dr. Augusto Saias, Dr. Joaquim Mendes, Dr. Augusto Penha, Dr. Custodio dos Santos and Dr. Afonso Quadros Camarinha Abragao. As for the others accused of the same crime, the date of their trial has not as yet been fixed by the procedures taking place in the first Office of the 3rd Vara, since the time of the legal delays has not yet passed.
